One hālau · two homes

Toronto & Clovis — One Sun, Two Skies.

Hālau Hula I Ka Lā exists in two places: Toronto, Canada, and Clovis, California. We are sister hālau — sharing one name, one mele tradition, and one lineage — separated by 4,000km and brought together every few years to dance side by side.

Hālau Hula I Ka Lā

The original hālau — our sister school in California's Central Valley, and the lineage from which our Toronto hālau grew.

Our shared lineage

One Name, Two Skies

Both hālau share the name Hālau Hula I Ka Lā — "hula school in the sun" — and the ʻōlelo Ka lā i ka mauli ola. We teach from the same mele, in the same tradition, in two cities that share little except the warmth our dancers carry.

Toronto

Hālau Hula I Ka Lā Toronto

Founded by Kumu Joanne Vicencio. We teach at VYbE Dance Company in Markham, dance across the GTA, and present AlohaFest at Mel Lastman Square each summer. Our ʻohana is small and growing.
